Chicago-based rapper Lil Durk is this year’s headliner. Born Durk Derrick Banks, he emerged from the challenging Englewood neighborhood. His music echoes the struggles and triumphs of his life. Since his debut in 2011, Lil Durk has become a force to be reckoned with in the hip-hop scene. His distinctive style, blending gritty street narratives with catchy hooks, earned him widespread recognition.
In 2022, Lil Durk reached new heights with his seventh album titled “7220,” which not only debuted but also peaked on the Billboard 200 chart. His collaborations with Lil Baby, Kanye West, Drake, and Chris Brown have solidified his position in the music industry.
“I am very excited about this year’s homecoming concert,” said N.C. A&T student Asia Shands, a junior from Louisville, Kentucky. “Lil Durk is one of my favorite artists, and even though I’ve seen him multiple times, I am still looking forward to seeing him perform again. The song I’m most excited to hear is ‘Evil Twin.’”
Sharing the spotlight for the annual concert is Summer Walker, the Atlanta-based R&B artist whose soulful voice and emotional lyrics have captured the hearts of fans worldwide. Known for her unique blend of R&B and neo-soul, Walker has drawn comparisons to legendary artists like Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu. Her breakthrough track, “Girls Need Love,” became an anthem, resonating with listeners everywhere.
“After blasting Summer Walker’s most recent EP, I can’t wait to see her in concert,” said A&T junior Kimar Vance.
Also gracing the stage is Flo Milli, the talented rapper and songwriter from Mobile, Alabama. With her fierce lyrics, confident attitude, and energetic flow, Flo Milli gained widespread recognition with her viral single “Beef FloMix.” Her rapid rise to fame was further acknowledged when she became a part of the prestigious Freshman Class of 2021 in the renowned hip hop magazine, “XXL.”
“ICU” singer Coco Jones is also bringing the vocals and vibes this year.. Born Courtney Michaela Ann in Columbia, South Carolina, the multitalented singer, songwriter, and actress, is now better known by her stage name, Coco Jones. With a musical journey that started under the renowned label Def Jam Recordings, Jones soared to fame after her role as ‘Roxie’ in Disney’s hit movie “Let It Shine” (2012.) More recently, Jones has been playing Hillary Banks in the hit show Bel-Air on Peacock.
While her acting abilities introduced her to the world, it’s her musical talents that have truly captivated audiences. In 2023, Coco Jones’s star power reached new heights when she was awarded a BET Award for Best New Artist of the Year. With chart-toppers like “ICU” and “Double Back,” Coco Jones has effortlessly transitioned from her Disney days.
Rounding out the lineup is YBT Fatt, whose late addition to the list of performers caused quite a stir on campus. This emerging rapper from West Memphis, Arkansas, has been creating buzz under the record label Loaf Boyz Ventures. Fatt’s journey to fame kicked off in March with the release of his debut single, “Shot Off Gumbo,” a track that generated over 4 million views on YouTube.
“Shot Off Gumbo” owes part of its success to a collaboration with acclaimed artist Money Bagg Yo, whose feature on the track added an extra layer of appeal. YBT Fatt’s unique style and raw talent have resonated with audiences.
