Year after year, freshmen are often misguided and uninformed about the joys and mishaps of the greatest homecoming on Earth, also known as GHOE. These tips help navigate the unforgettable highs and inevitable lows of the most anticipated time of the year.
With invaluable tips on scheduling, event navigation, and balancing coursework and celebration, this guide is an essential companion for any first-year student looking to experience the magic of GHOE while securing a successful start to their college journey.
Plan Ahead
Begin your homecoming adventures by thoroughly researching the schedule and events. Create a daily itinerary that includes the must-see attractions, allowing you to make the most of your experience without missing out on anything exciting.
Tyler Walden, a freshman marketing and business management student, plans to be worry-free for the entire week.
“I plan on getting all of my school work done a week in advance so I can participate in GHOE activities,” Walden said.
Stay Hydrated
The energy and excitement of homecoming can be overwhelming, so always have a refillable water bottle in tow. Staying hydrated is crucial amid the festivities, helping you maintain your daily vigor.
While the celebration vibe might encourage indulgence, be mindful of your alcohol intake. Overindulgence can lead to dehydration and ruin your GHOE experience. Savor the moment responsibly.
Party Responsibly
Use rideshare apps or designated drivers to ensure safe passage to and from homecoming events. Prioritize your safety by traveling with friends whenever possible, especially during nighttime outings.
Senior Business Management student Joshua Taylor says that he doesn’t recommend going to house parties.
“It’s important to take advantage of the parties that are secured for safety, and always communicate and share your location with friends if you are attending a party off campus,” Taylor said.
Secure Your Belongings
Opt for a secure bag or backpack to safeguard your essentials like identification, phone, and wallet. Remember policies like clear bag guidelines for the concert and homecoming game.
Budget Wisely
Set a budget for food, merchandise, and entertainment. This financial foresight will help you avoid overspending and ensure your GHOE experience remains enjoyable without breaking the bank.
Upperclassmen suggest saving at least “$200” and consider carrying cash in addition to cards for places that may not accept cards.
Know Your Limits
While enjoying GHOE, drink responsibly if you choose to consume alcohol. Knowing your limits and recognizing when to rest and recover can prevent burnout, allowing you to embrace the festivities fully.
Engage with Alumni
Attend alumni events, like panel discussions or networking sessions, to learn from their experiences and gain valuable insights into life after graduation.
Approach them with a smile, a firm handshake, and a genuine interest in their stories—it’s a great way to build lasting connections and get a head start on your future.
Alumna Essence Mclaurin says that one conversation with the right person can open doors you didn’t know you wanted to walk through.
“Aggie alums are prominent worldwide, so there’s a great chance they know someone you should know—eyes are always watching,” Mclaurin said.
Capture the Memories
Don’t forget to document your GHOE experience with photos and videos. Reliving your GHOE adventure will be a breeze with your digital keepsakes safely stored on a cloud storage provider.
Have Fun and Be Safe
Remember that GHOE is about enjoying yourself and celebrating your university’s culture.
Make memories, but always prioritize your safety and the safety of others.
GHOE is an exciting event, and following these guidelines will help ensure you have a memorable and enjoyable experience while staying safe and responsible.
This year’s homecoming is Sunday October 29-Sunday November 5
