Topher Sanders & Corey Johnson will lead investigative reporting segments at the NBCUniversal masterclass Series on Monday, December 4. Journalism students will be able to soak up valuable information in Crosby Hall, Room 215. The day-long event will be split into a morning and afternoon session.
Pulitzer Prize winner Corey Johnson, an investigative reporter at ProPublica, has an impressive track record. His notable contributions include being part of the team that clinched the 2022 Pulitzer Prize in Investigative Reporting. The award-winning expose revealed highly toxic hazards within Florida’s sole battery recycling plant, a critical investigation published in the Tampa Bay Times. Johnson stated, “Investigative journalism is crucial in the era of fake news, and it is important to know how to distribute it properly to the world.”
Pulitzer finalist Topher Sanders, a reporter at ProPublica, brings a wealth of experience to the masterclass. His reporting portfolio covers critical issues such as railroad safety, race, inequality, and the justice system. Sanders was part of a 2019 Pulitzer Prize finalist team for Public Service and was honored with the Peabody and George Polk awards for their comprehensive coverage of President Trump’s family separation policy.

The day-long event is divided into two informative sessions, each diving into various aspects of investigative reporting. The morning session, beginnning at 9 a.m., will provide participants with a deep dive into the history and mission of investigative reporting. Topics such as effective reporting techniques and the art of conducting compelling interviews will be explored, offering valuable insights into the foundations of this effective journalistic practice.
The afternoon session is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. This segment is designed to be more hands-on by equipping participants with practical skills essential to investigative reporting, including an introduction to Freedom of Information (FOI), navigating databases, and working with spreadsheets. This interactive approach aims to empower aspiring journalists with the tools needed to uncover hidden truths and hold those in power accountable.
The masterclass with Johnson and Sanders is a unique opportunity for journalism students to gain insights from professionals at the forefront of investigative reporting. As a young journalist, this event promises a day filled with valuable knowledge, practical tips, and engaging discussions.
