The McClatchy Company is a media company that owns 30 newspapers in 14 states, including The Miami Herald, The Sacramento Bee, The Kansas City Star, The Fort Worth Star-Telegram and The Charlotte Observer.

McClatchy Media is taking action to amplify the voices of local communities by opening doors for journalists from underrepresented backgrounds and providing them with training opportunities.

The HBCU News Internship is a news-focused initiative in partnership with McClatchy’s annual summer internship program. It seeks students or recent graduates who are passionate about reporting local news and have a basic understanding of journalistic ethics and standards. Prior experience reporting or producing for a student or professional news publication is a plus.

Interns will receive weekly training sessions and networking opportunities, be treated like staff members, be assigned to a senior-level mentor for coaching and training and work with longtime staff and local leaders.

Applicants must be current students or graduates of accredited historically Black colleges or universities to qualify for the program.

Applicants must submit a persuasive personal statement, resume and three to five samples of their best news-related work to apply. Applications must be submitted no later than 5 p.m. EST on Dec. 19, 2025.
