McClatchy Media’s HBCU Development Internship Program is offering HBCU students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in media, publishing and business through guaranteed internships and full-time employment opportunities.

McClatchy is a national media organization that owns more than 30 newspapers and digital brands in 14 states, including The Miami Herald, The Sacramento Bee, The Kansas City Star, The Fort Worth Star-Telegram and The Charlotte Observer.

McClatchy Media is continuing its commitment to amplifying diverse voices and developing future leaders in journalism, business, technology and innovation. The company’s HBCU Development Internship Program offers a multiyear, paid experience designed to prepare students for long-term careers in media and publishing.

The program provides guaranteed 10-week summer internships beginning at $15 per hour, mentorship from experienced professionals and a full-time position at McClatchy upon graduation. Participants will gain hands-on experience in journalism, business operations, digital design, marketing, finance, product innovation and other areas that support the company’s newsroom.

While the program is primarily remote, select reporting internships may include hybrid or on-site opportunities to provide immersive newsroom experiences.

Eligibility Criteria

• Must be a current freshman or sophomore enrolled at an accredited HBCU with a minimum 3.0 GPA

• Should demonstrate a passion for storytelling, leadership and community engagement through coursework, volunteer work or extracurricular activities

• Must commit to completing two to three consecutive summer internships and one year of full-time employment with McClatchy following graduation

Applicants are required to submit a personal statement explaining why they are a strong fit for the McClatchy HBCU Development Program and how it aligns with their goals, interests and values. Students may highlight their interest in media, technology, business or community impact as part of their application.
